Where the Rift runs pink

Natron

Karibu Natron

On the floor of the Great Rift Valley lies a lake so alkaline it turns red in the sun. Above it rises Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Maasai Mountain of God, and every year East Africa’s flamingos come here to be born.

Off the northern circuit

Five hours from Arusha on the last road north before Kenya. No game drives and no crowds, just walking country, Maasai villages and a horizon that shimmers at forty degrees.

Flamingos

East Africa’s whole flock of lesser flamingos, some two and a half million birds, comes here to nest.

The caustic water keeps jackals and hyenas away from nests built on islands of salt. Our guides know where the birds are feeding each week.

Good to know

Why go with us.

  • 01Based at the lakeOur team lives in Engare Sero, on Natron’s southern shore, not in an office five hours away.
  • 02Private, never pooledYour own vehicle and guide, at your pace, with no strangers added to fill seats.
  • 03One working dayA written itinerary and a final price, from the person who will plan your trip. Nothing to pay to ask.

Because we live here. Your trip is planned and guided by our own team in Engare Sero, people who walk these flats, climb Lengai and know the families in the bomas. Every trip is private, and the person who answers your first message plans it start to finish.

Fly into Kilimanjaro International (JRO). From Arusha it is about five hours by 4×4 via Mto wa Mbu and Engaruka, the last stretch on rough gravel. Light aircraft can also land at the Lake Natron airstrip.

Flamingos feed along the shore for much of the year. Breeding usually builds from around August, with chicks on the lake from roughly November to January, but it depends on rainfall and water levels and changes year to year.

Very. It is a steep, loose ascent of about 1,700 m that starts around midnight to avoid the heat, takes five to six hours up and three to four down. You need good fitness and sturdy boots. The mountain is active, so we check conditions before every climb.

Natron sits in the floor of the Rift at about 600 m, and afternoons often pass 35–40 °C. June to August is the most comfortable time. We plan walks for early morning and late afternoon.

No. The water is strongly alkaline and can burn skin. You can swim in the fresh river pools of the Engare Sero gorge instead.

Private vehicle and guide, accommodation, meals, drinking water, Wildlife Management Area and village fees, and transfers from Arusha. International flights, visas, tips and travel insurance are not included.

Yes. Natron sits between Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, so it fits naturally into a longer northern-circuit trip. Our Bespoke journeys can add the Serengeti, Tarangire or a Kilimanjaro climb, with the same private guide throughout.

Send us the form below or a WhatsApp message. Within one working day you will have a written itinerary and a final price. There is nothing to pay to enquire.
